The Isle of Raasay's two new development officers are Joan MacKay of Raasay and Lloyd Gudgeon of Gairloch. Joan and Lloyd are based in our community hall and will be giving regular progress updates through our Raasay Development Partnership page.

The Raasay Development Partnership's newsletter for April 2012 is now available, download it here. Or go to our RDP Page to read the newsletter online.

Raasay is one of the Inner Hebridean Islands. To the East is the Scottish mainland and to the West is The Isle of Skye. The waters to the East of Raasay are known as The Inner Sound of Raasay which occupy some of the deepest channels around Britain. The Caledonian MacBrayne ferry, which is the main access route to the island, crosses the Sound of Raasay to The Isle of Skye. A narrow channel known as The Kyle of Rona separates the North of Raasay from the Isle of South Rona.

The Norse name "Raasay" means Isle of the (Roe) or Red Deer. Dun CaanPerhaps the island's most distinct geological feature is the unique flat-topped peak known as Dun Caan. A walk from the pier at Suisnish to Dun Caan (the highest point 1456 feet) and return can be achieved in a day with time to spare to catch the last ferry back to Skye.

Inverarish is the main village part of which was used as a prisoner of war camp for the Germans during World War I. The Local Store and Post Office are also within the village and the Primary School is nearby.

Accommodation on the island is offered by Borodale House, formerly known as the Isle of Raasay Hotel, or you could book into a B&B or holiday cottage. The youth hostel is open in the summer months. The island has a daily ferry service which takes 15 minutes to cross between Raasay and Sconser on the Isle of Skye.

However you decide to spend your time on Raasay we all welcome you...
Come and discover what Raasay has to offer.

There are a variety of things to occupy the visitor; inscribed stones, an old manor house (formerly the seat of the MacLeods), remains of Brochel Castle and many walks.

Raasay House which provides a home for Raasay Outdoor Center had a disastrous fire in January 2009, only weeks before the newly renovated building was to re-open.

Rebuilding work has commenced and Raasay house hopes to be open again by 2012.
